VR Health Champions

The VR Health Champions project is a โ‚ฌ7.88 million, three-year European initiative co-funded by the Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) instrument under the European Regional Development Fund. Its primary aim is to accelerate the adoption of extended reality (XR) technologies in healthcare across Europe, with a focus on less developed regions in Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe. The project seeks to break down market, clinical, and regulatory barriers that hinder the integration of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) applications in medical diagnostics, therapies, and surgeries.

Objective and Approach

The main objectives of the VR Health Champions project are

  • Technological Advancement: Elevate the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of selected VR/AR innovations from TRL 6 to TRL 9, facilitating their readiness for market deployment.

  • Barrier Mitigation: Address and reduce market, clinical, and regulatory obstacles that impede the adoption of XR technologies in healthcare.

  • Ecosystem Expansion: Enlarge the European ecosystem and value chains developing healthcare XR applications by fostering interregional collaboration among 18 partners from eight EU Member States.

To achieve these goals, the project emphasizes interregional collaboration, the construction of new value chains across Europe, and the mitigation of market barriers by leveraging the strengths of its partners. A significant aspect of the initiative is its focus on developing VR/AR applications with the potential to revolutionize areas such as surgical navigation, therapeutic gaming, cognitive assessment, medical education, and the customization of VR equipment for medical use.

Results and Values

The VR Health Champions project is expected to yield several key outcomes:โ€‹

  • Enhanced Technological Readiness: Elevating the TRL of VR/AR solutions to facilitate their integration into routine medical practice

  • Barrier Reduction: Implementing strategies to overcome market, clinical, and regulatory challenges, thereby smoothing the path for XR technologies in healthcare.

  • Ecosystem Growth: Expanding the European healthcare XR ecosystem through knowledge transfer, funding opportunities, and interregional collaboration.

By supporting innovative SMEs and fostering a collaborative environment, the project aims to expedite the introduction of advanced XR technologies into healthcare, ultimately improving patient care and healthcare outcomes across Europe.

Free webinar: Navigating market access for VR health technologies in Europe

A promising VR health solution is one thing. Getting it into a healthcare system is another. Our latest Market Access Landscape Report maps the routes, requirements and barriers facing VR health technologies across eight European markets. But on 18 September, we want to go one step further: from research to real market experience. Join us for a free #online #webinar where Andrรกs Perรฉnyi, Syreon Research Institute, and Cristiana Costa, Instituto Pedro Nunes, will discuss the reportโ€™s key findings and what they mean for companies planning market entry and international expansion. And weโ€™ll bring in the SME perspective. Maciej Stanuch from MedApp S.A. and Cornel Amariei from dotLumen will share what navigating these challenges looks like in practice. Moderated by Michael Barngrover, XR4Europe, the conversation will explore: โžก๏ธ Why do promising VR health technologies still struggle to reach European healthcare systems? โžก๏ธ How can companies navigate different reimbursement pathways, evidence requirements and market conditions across Europe? โžก๏ธ And what can SMEs actually take from the report when deciding where and how to enter the market? Not just the research. The reality behind it, too. ๐Ÿ“… 18 September 2026 ๐Ÿ•š 11:00 CET ๐Ÿ’ป Online via Zoom โฑ Approx. 45 minutes ๐ŸŽŸ Free participation Read more โ†“ https://vrhealthchampions.eu/free-webinar-navigating-market-access-for-vr-health-technologies-in-europe/ Register now โ†’ https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/r12tal_9QoCMTVFcx_XY5A#/

XR in healthcare is no longer just about experimentation. The real challenge is making these technologies usable, integrated, and ready for clinical practice ๐Ÿ“ข

In our latest article, we explore the Technology Domain, one of the four domains of the CIMIT methodology implemented in the #VRHealthChampions project to support the development and assessment of XR healthcare innovations. From AI Algorithms and anonymised medical data to AR-Headset Technologies, interoperability, and medical navigation software, the Technology Domain focuses on the technical foundations needed to bring innovative solutions into real healthcare settings. The article also highlights how collaboration between SMEs, hospitals, universities, and research organisations across Europe helps accelerate innovation and prepare XR solutions for real-world adoption. The programme now enters its evaluation and selection phase

VR Health Champions Open Call 2026 attracted 74 applications from across Europe, competing for 14 specialised challenges within XR healthcare sector. Following the final deadline extension to 7 December 2025, the programme now enters its evaluation and selection phase. Through this call, VR Health Champions invited eligible SMEs to propose solutions for 14 industry-driven XR challenges, spanning areas such as VR-based cognitive assessment, hospital onboarding, spatial computing for assistive wearables, cybersecurity, and SaMD validation. Some of the highest-interest topics included: Market Entry & Product Launch Strategies in EU health markets GDPR, Cybersecurity and Software Validation for Medical XR Indoor/Outdoor VIO & SLAM for Assistive Wearables Onboarding Healthcare Professionals for VR Adoption AI-driven Monocular Depth Estimation and Sensor Fusion The highest number of applications came from Poland, followed by Romania, and a strong cluster of submissions from Greece, Italy and Portugal, with Spain also showing notable interest. โ€œThe most striking observation was how many submissions arrived in the very last hours of the call. Despite strict eligibility rules and a challenging match between SMEs and highly specialised challenges, the interest did not slow down โ€” quite the opposite. We received an exceptional number of questions throughout the process, which shows how seriously applicants treated this opportunity. We are delighted that, despite its complexity, the Open Call exceeded our expectations. The real strength proved to be our consortium partners and the amplification through digital channels.โ€ โ€” Viola Keresztes, Project Manager, EIT Health InnoStars Each of the 14 challenges will result in one winner, who will develop a targeted output directly with one of the Flagship SMEs: dotLumen, MedApp, MEEVA, Metaskills or Virtuleap. Next Milestones for Applicants โ€œNow begins the most demanding part of the programme: reviewing all submissions in detail and identifying those with the strongest potential. With such a high number of applications, selecting only one winner per challenge will be a serious task. Still, we believe that through rigorous evaluation and close collaboration with our Flagship SMEs, we will choose the teams capable of truly disrupting XR in healthcare and delivering impact where it matters most.โ€ โ€” Cristiana Costa, Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), Project Coordinator The remote evaluation process will begin on 10 January 2026, with applicants expected to receive the results no later than 12 January. From 12 to 24 January, shortlisted SMEs will be invited to hearings and the final selection stage, followed by the official notification of outcomes on 26 January. Applicants will have 15 calendar days to submit any appeals. The overall activity is scheduled to conclude on 31 January 2026, with kick-off meetings for the selected SMEs taking place between 16 and 28 February. Successful SMEs can receive up to โ‚ฌ60,000 in equity-free fundingg to implement a high-impact solution with one of the Flagship companies. Thank You to All Applicants We extend our sincere thanks to all 74 SMEs that submitted proposals. Your effort, expertise and ambition continue to shape the future of healthcare in Europe. Stay tuned โ€” the 14 winners will be announced soon! ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://vrhealthchampions.eu/vr-health-champions-open-call-2026-we-received-74-applications/
