POLBIONICA sp. z o.o.POLBIONICA is effectively working on the first bionic pancreas for transplantation. The bionic pancreas is an organ built from biological components including cells from the patient himself, eliminating the need for immunosuppression. Cells taken from the patient are sequentially arranged into a complete organ using engineering and mechatronics. The organ is created using a 3D bioprinting process and will consist of scaffolding, functional vessels and pancreatic islets. In the next stage, the pancreatic islets will be replaced with stem cells modified (transformation) into alpha and beta cells, i.e. cells that produce insulin and glucagon. With this solution, the patient will not wait for cells from a donor, as we will use his own stem cells taken from bone marrow or adipose tissue. This method does not require surgical intervention on the patient's pancreas and uses minimally invasive procedures.
POLBIONICA is researching and commercializing a key component to support the development of the bionic pancreas: a novel bioreactor for organ culture. The use of the latest technology and pioneering research on the human body, has led to the development of technology to obtain a unique biotouch composition. Customized biotouch and 3D printing method (G-code).
On the basis of the developed tissue engineering and accompanying biotechnological solutions, it will offer services for preclinical toxicological studies and evaluation of the effectiveness of new molecules (medicinal substances). Bionic tissue models with a vascular system will be an answer to the inadequacies of current cell culture models, which, due to their two-dimensionality (2D), may give misleading results in assessing the toxicity or efficacy of tested substances. An important element is also the response of the created tools to the problem of protection of animals used in scientific research. The main recipients will be research centers, pharmaceutical companies interested in expanding the scope of research in the process of development of medicinal substances.
