The Project aims at establishing in Krakow the Excellence Centre in Computational Medicine. Sano's mission is: - development of new computational methods, algorithms, models and technologies related to personalized medicine, - introducing new diagnostic and therapeutic solutions based on computer simulations into everyday healthcare practice, - stimulating the emergence and development of enterprises creating technologies enabling the introduction of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods, - contribution to new educational programs for modern, personalized medicine. Problem

Sano responds to the need for innovative approaches to healthcare delivery. World health systems are in financial crisis, with over 90% of OECD countries increasing their allocation of GDP annually. The expanding numbers of elderly patients suffering from multiple comorbidities, and the existing approach to care provision, seem destined to bring economic failure to most western countries within fifteen years, even sooner in the USA. Poland is no exception; government expenditure has doubled since 2006. Across the EU, health services are facing disruption of human resources and this migration is already impacting care. New knowledge is increasing, and medical practitioners must remain intellectually current whilst treating more patients. As a result, healthcare is finally accepting that it must adopt solutions from other sophisticated industries. A revolution has begun, introducing Computational Medicine, and promising to reverse cost escalation by changing working practices. Yet the speed is slow because universities' reluctance to remove natural barriers between disciplines is caught by the fundamental academic creativity that would typically drive the process.

Objective and Approach

Sano combines expertise across the contributing disciplines to build a facility that can provide all, or any part, of a Computational Medicine solution. Staffed by a mix of multi-disciplined experts, and with strong links to the clinical and industrial communities, the Centre will have a commanding position in Europe as the translational hub for practical in silico solutions, and will be self-sufficient by 2026.

About Computational Medicine

Computational Medicine is heralding one of the most significant transformations in global healthcare that has ever taken place. In a process that is now accelerating rapidly, yet which will require perhaps two decades to mature fully, the current reliance on human-driven processes will migrate to a sophisticated machine-supervised mechanism optimised with computational methods and redefined professional roles.  The new methods will provide automated structure and organisation for entire medical institutions, detailed evidence-based decision support for patient-level clinical optimisation, and treatment pathway control that is streamlined in both its medical precision and its temporal efficiency; the results will be improved outcomes, the increasingly rapid return of patients to society, and - for several reasons - lower costs.  The updated roles will see a precise matching between the skills required for fully effective patient management and continuing clinical technological progress, with skilled communicators becoming the front-line interface with patients, clinical staff time efficiently managed by decision support systems, and innovative knowledge generation methods attracting a significantly increased proportion of the most highly skilled clinical workforce
